Dominicans have reinforced the vigilance on the border line with Haiti

Armed Forces minister Ramon Aquino ordered reinforcing the vigilance in the border zone in order to prevent smuggling and illegal traffic, which traditionally increase during the holidays.

More than 6,000 soldiers will guard the border line with Haiti, to guarantee the control of movements by Dominican and Haitian citizens in border zone. Soldiers are quartered in Dajabon, Elias Pina, Jimani and Pedernales provinces. According to Armed Forces officials, the guards are equipped with everything that a military encampment requires, including weapons (M-16 carbine), vehicles, and basic equipment.

Searchers for gold and copper are coming to the Dominican Republic

Two Canadian mining companies - Everton Resources Inc. and GlobeStar Mining Corp. - intend to begin a new search for gold and copper in the central Dominican Republic. The searches will be held in copper and gold producing Maimon Formation about 100 kilometres (62 miles) north of Santo Domingo. The companies are going to use helicopters loaded with electromagnetic and magnetic measurement equipment.

It will be the first such search in this area since 1972. The mine in Maimon Formation is scheduled to begin producing in 2008. The mine is estimated to hold 1.28 grams per tonne of gold. As regards copper, the Maimon site is supposed to hold 3.35 metric tonnes (3.69 tons). It would be one the highest grade open-pit copper mines.


The largest resort in the Caribbean will be built in the Dominican Republic

Carlton Advisory Service's hospitality group has announced the construction of a new luxurious resort. The 1,100 acre property is supposed to become the largest resort in the Caribbean. Th location is the Bay of Luperon. When the resort development is complete, it will span 10 miles of coastline.


Barcelo Hotels & Resorts acquires its eleventh property in the Dominican Republic

Barcelo Hotels & Resorts has added to its collection the Barcelo Punta Cana Resort, which was previously operated by Super Clubs as the Breezes Punta Cana. The resort includes 795 guestrooms and suites, a casino, a spa, convention facilities, and seven restaurants. It is situated located on an expansive 400-meter stretch of Arena Gorda Beach at Bavaro Beach in Punta Cana. The resort has become the eleventh Barcelo-branded hotel in the Domican Republic.
