"Pure Bliss"

I just left this wonderful place May 31, 2004. Sun Village Beach Resort was truly beautiful. Many stairs so be prepared to get a little work out, but even the stairs are extremely scenic. The staff is excellent, the many pools are wonderful, the rooms are great, everything at this resort is just phenomenal. The ora of this place is pure excitement. Yes there were small bugs in your room in certain areas (ants) but come on your in another country be real. The food is great and the staff is very accommodating. The only negative thing I can say is don't eat at the Thai Restuarant I've been sick for 4 days now, but even that did not change my overall view of this resort. The sick part is a part that comes with traveling to different countries. And like others have said make sure you have plenty of sun block. I stayed 5 days and 4 nights and I was sad to leave. I suggest for souvenirs you get a tour guide (they speak Eng & Span) provided by the hotel (tip him $15 to $ $20) and get a cab (for $30 to go every where) and go into the city to different shops to get your gifts, this tour also includes a history of the city and a few stops at historic landmarks. If you want jewerly bring some real cash or credit cards it's quite expensive. If you have a choice of your Concierge pick Jamie. He's the greatest, he will help you deal with all your personal & individual needs. This includes daily phone calls just to check on you and make sure your needs are fulfilled. Sunvillage Beach Resort is the greatest of all times. I suggest it to all couples, honeymoons, romantic getaways whatever. It's also great for singles (me), I went down w/ a girlfriend and we had the time of our lives. Go and see for your self you won't be disappointed at all.

"A very relaxing vacation"

My wife and I returned from the Sun Village in Puerta Plata two weeks ago and we had a wonderful time. We, like the rest of you, read these horrifying reviews for a couple of months before our trip. But I’m happy to report that we had a truly relaxing experience.
Upon our arrival we were greeted by an extremely courteous bellboy and front desk worker. Our room wasn’t ready upon arrival but that was our fault because we requested a specific room (thanks to another reviewer). They recommended that we go have lunch and come back to check on the room. So we grabbed a bite at Ovando’s, which was excellent. When we went back to the front desk a short time later and our room was ready.
The resort was spread out so there was a lot of walking. This didn’t bother us at all because we like to work out so we got plenty of exercise. One thing regarding exercise (if your interested), the web site and literature we read before the trip stated that there was no gym but much to our surprise we found a little gym tucked away by the theater. The equipment is extremely old but they had enough free weights do keep any gym rat somewhat content for the week. If you want cardio equipment, there stuff isn’t that good. Go for a walk around the property and you’ll be happier. In speaking to the management at the hotel, they said that they have started construction on a wellness center, which will include full spa and Gym. They estimated it would be ready in late 2005 sometime. Regarding the construction, there is some going on at the resort, but it didn’t bother us, or anyone that we spoke to.
All and all we had a great time. We were able to relax, enjoy some sun, and meet some great people from all over the world. We found this to be a great value for the money. Remember, if you want the Ritz, than you will need to pay for it. I would go back to Sun Village.

"Not the West Indies as I know it"

Stayed in Sun Villiage in Feb 2003. 26 of us in a wedding party. I would say you get what you pay for as there is a reason why Dominican Republic is cheaper than other islands, its a poor country, and doesn't represent the trus 'West Indies' culture ie during my stay I didn't hear one bit of regae or steel bands playing. The resort itself is OK, plenty of sunbathing options but the beach below average, and the sea was not that nice (one morning I saw a dead dog floating in the sea!!).
Food not brilliant but eddible. Out of 26 of us all but about 5 of us got ill, and 2 of our party member got so ill that they were put on drips although I don't know what caused this. All I can say is that if you are on a budget this complex will be fine. If you are looking for a true west indian feel go to another island.
