"A Place to Relax"

We just returned from a very pleasant week at the Capella. Here is a list of the good and bad points:
Good: Grounds are beautiful; we enjoyed the flamingos and the peacocks; food is good; rooms are very large (we were in #2000 building); there are enough chaise lounges and pool space for everyone; staff is friendly and helpful; resort is only twenty-five minutes from Santo Domingo airport. Vendors on the beach are polite and not too pushy.
Bad: Beach is rocky with seaweed; they clean up the seaweed very morning, but it comes back; furniture is aging; towels are taken in the morning and not returned until after you are ready to dress for dinner; some areas are infested with sand wasps; tiny mosquitoes bite like mad; bed linens smell musty; you may reserve at the a la carte restaurant only once per week, and the service there is SLOW.

"OK"

My boyfriend and I spent the last week in March at Capella. I was a little hesitant about staying there after reading some terrible reviews on this site, especially since we went to a 5 star hotel in Bahamas last year ,but we had a great time! The grounds were beautiful, the staff was very nice. There are peacocks roaming around and flamingos near the lobby. We had a room in the 4000 wing, and the only complaint with the room was that it got a little musty from the humidity. I dont know what the people who said the food was terrible were talking about, it wasn't the best food I ever had but it was good. The drinks were not watered down and were free flowing. There were a lot of vendors on the beach but if you say no thank you they go away. If you go to left side of the beach its great for snorkeling and the right side for relaxing, or joining in some of the activities (like Merengue lessons). We were surprised to find that there were not many Americans, a lot of Europeans and Canadian's. In all we had an amazing week, and we got much more than we expect for the price. PS. I highly recommend the Saona Island trip!

"More than I expected for a single traveler"

I read the reviews for this hotel after I booked it for the Memorial Day weekend. It was good to have an idea because when I finally got there, I found more than I expected. I had no problem with the tiles, but yes with the A/C, which was fixed soon. The Disco is not so good, since they play too much merengue and have no balance in genders, but you can compensate that with other activities like going into the beach by night, which is pretty safe and warm. The food was OK, but the service was great, specially with someone like me, a single woman traveling by her self. The hotel, as most of All-Inclusives, is more family and honemooners oriented. Nevertheless, I had such a great time there that I didn't went outside the hotel in four days. Thus, what I recommend is to go there without great expectations, but with the attitude to have a nice vacation. You will be retributed and will always remember it.
