Dominican Republic > Sosua Sosua![]() Sosua is located on the North Coast (Atlantic Ocean) of the Dominican Republic, about 20 km east of Puerto Plata, only 5 km from the main airport of the North, Puerto Plata International and 14 km west of Cabarete. A small village 10 years ago, nowadays Sosua offers everything for wonderful vacation: hotels just close to long white sandy Sosua beach, a variety of watersports, cozy bars and restaurants with local dishes and lively nightlife. Sosua is the perfect place for bargain-hunters, explorers and singles looking for a beach accommodation and a hopping night life. The area where Sosua is located was owned by United Fruit until the late 1920s. Sosua was founded in 1940, when approximately six hundred European Jewish refugees were allowed to immigrate to Dominican Republic (as a result of World War II and Hitler's persecutions) and settles in this area. Although only 100 remained in Sosua (which intermarry with the Dominican), their influence on this area is very evident. ![]() Sosua consists of two separate villages which are separated by a bay. To the east of the main beach lies Los Charamicos. This former fishing village has in recent years been converted into a business and residential sector, but preserved its ambiance of typically Dominican. Almost all restaurants serve local dishes. Noisy moto-conchos runs up and down the rambling crowded streets. Most of the buildings in the centre of Los Charamicos are rather old and typical for Dominican village. El Batey lies on the opposite side of the bay. It is an area of new hotels, upscale restaurants, boutiques, resorts, villas and nightclubs. |
