Dominican Republic > Shopping in the Dominican Republic Shopping in the Dominican RepublicMost shops in the Dominican Republic are open from 8:30 a.m. to noon and, after closing for the traditional siesta, reopen at 2:30 p.m. and close again at 6 p.m. In many shops payment can be made in US dolars. Santo Domingo shoppingSanto Domingo has the largest free zone in the Caribbean. Duty-free shops are situated at the Las Americas International Airport, at La Atarazana, downtown, and at the Centro de los Heroes on the south side of the city. In the newer districts of the city are several large shopping complexes with modern boutiques, jewelry and shops featuring handicrafts from all over the country. Puerto Plata shopping![]() Puerto Plata is located at the heart of the Amber Coast, so it's no wonder that here you can find an incredible variety of Dominican amber, of all types and sizes. The most precious is a blue amber, that can be found only in the Dominican Republic. The best place to purchase amber is Amber Museum of Puerto Plata, and you can find a lot of amber jewellery at small shops of Puerto Plata. Sosua ShoppingLocal supermarkets offer Dominican rum, coffee and cigars. A hand-painted T-shirt is another souvenir you can buy in Sosua. They are plentiful throughout the shops and along the streets of El Batey. La Romana ShoppingShopping in Altos de Chavon (close to La Romana) is an experience. Craft shops in the artists' colony offer a variety of items, including handmade jewelry and pottery, and the Oscar de la Renta Boutique sells this famous Dominican's designs. Santiago shoppingMost of Santiago shops are situated along Calle El Sol. Another shoping place is Mercado - a picturesque market, where there are all sorts of local arts and crafts, including wood carvings, amber and larimar jewelry, bone and horn objects, and ceramics. Bargaining there is a "must," so shoppers needn't be shy. Santiago is famous for its carnival, and the fabulous masks used for the festivities are sold throughout the city. Visitors will also find lovely ceramic dolls typical of the region. |
