Samana Peninsula

Samana

Located in the northeast area of the Dominican Republic, the Samana Peninsula attracts visitors with its natural tropical beauty: unspoiled sandy beaches, tall coconut trees, tropical rainforests, crystal clear mountain streams rushing to meet the sea. It is a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers. No wonder that Samana was considered one of the 25 best locations in the world by Conde Nast Traveler magazine.

Samana Peninsula is dotted with little towns and fishing villages such as Santa Barbara de Samana (Samana City), El Limon, Las Galeras and Las Terrenas. The towns feature brightly painted Dominican homes and a Mediterranean-influenced atmosphere.

Limon Waterfall

Just off the Samana Peninsula there is a little island, called Cayo Levantado. The island is a popular destination for a day of pure escapism. The turquoise waters are crystal clear here; the lovely beaches are flanked by palm trees. Parrots, owls, gannets, and some other birds can be found at Cayo Levantado.

El Limon Waterfall is another attraction of the Samana Peninsula. It is approximately 300 m above sea level and has a 40 m drop. The trail up to the waterfall takes about an hour by foot or horseback, but the efforts are rewarded with spectacular scenes.

Samana's north coastline is famous for its scuba diving and whale watching. Each winter the humpback whales are coming to tropical waters to mate and give birth to their young. At Samana Bay you can see this impressive spectacle.
