Punta Cana

Punta Cana. Dominican Republic

One of the Caribbean's most popular new vacation destination, Punta Cana is located on the easternmost tip of the island. Exotic, tropical and totally natural, Punta Cana is a nature lover's paradise with its swaying palm trees, turqoise waters and 32km (20 miles) of silky-fine white sand.

The best airport to land at is the Punta Cana International Airport. Almost all Punta Cana hotels are less than half hour drive away from this airport. The second choice is the La Romana Airport. And if you land at Las Americas International (Santo Domingo), be prepared for a four hour drive.

The climate of Punta Cana area is a litte bit different from other island: it's one of the most arid landscapes in the Caribbean, and it rarely rains during daylight hours.

Don't expect a real town here. Punta Cana itself is actually a small village. The area, which is known as Punta Cana resort, includes also Juanillo, Cabeza de Toro, Bavaro, El Cortecito, Macao and Uvero Alto. El Cortecito, situated between Bavaro and Macao, is the closest thing to a little beach town in the area.

Don't expect much sightseeing opportunities as well. Punta Cana is "rest and relaxation" destination. It is the perfect place for a honeymoon or romantic getaway. It's also a good place for vacation with childrens. The area is made up almost completely of large all-inclusive resorts, offering everything a vacationer may need. But most hotels focus on family entertainment.

However, there are some attractions that can be reached from Punta Cana. Manatee Park, a wildlife site, is nearby. The largest shopping complex in the area is Bavaro Plaza.
