What are the entry requirements? Do I need a visa?

Each country has an individual agreement with the Dominican Republic, so we recommend you to check the requirements with a local Travel Agent or the Dominican Republic Consulate or Embassy in your country. Generally, a valid passport and a Tourist Card are required.

Where can I get a Tourist Card and what should I do with it?

A Tourist Card can be purchased at all airports upon arrival in the Dominican Republic. The cost is US $10. The card has two parts. The first part of the card will be taken when you pass through Immigration control. The second part should be kept in a safe place, as it must be given back to Immigration when you depart the Dominican Republic.

Do I need to have a return flight ticket?

All non-residents should have a round trip (return) ticket to prove they will be departing the Dominican Republic.

How long am I allowed to stay in the Dominican Republic?

Travellers are allowed to stay for up to 90 days with a Tourist Card. If you extend your stay, you have to pay a penalty.

When is the best time to visit?

I don't know Spanish. Will this be a problem?

No. Thousands of tourists visit the Dominican Republic without knowing any Spanish at all. If you speak English, it will be enough for communication. The Dominicans, who are working in travel industry, speak English quite well. Many resorts have multi-lingual staff, so, even if neither English nor Spanish is your language, you have a chance to find someone to assist you.

Is the Dominican Republic a good place to visit with children?

Absolutely! The relaxed atmosphere and variety of outdoor activities make the Dominican Republic a great place for the whole family! Be sure to take special baby sunscreen.

Can I bring my pet to the Dominican Republic?

It's easy to travel with a cat or dog to the Dominican Republic. But it is not recommended to bring birds, as they need to remain in quarantine. Contact your carrier for more information and the cost of transporting your animal. At the airport in the Dominican Republic you should pass the animal control (Sanidad Animal) in the customs area. A veterinarian certificate issued for rabbies and distemper in the past 30 days of the travel date is required for a dog.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting?

No special vaccinations are required at the present time. Malaria exists in some areas of the Dominican Republic (especially the rural areas close to the border of Haiti). We recommend you to take insect repellent and medicine against Malaria (standby therapy).

Is it safe to drink the tap water?

We advise you boil the tap water, which means that it is perfectly safe to use for teas and coffees. It is not recommended to drink tap water, especially if you have a sensitive stomach. Bottled water can be bought almost everywhere.
