Car Rental

If you are not that kind of person who spend all days on the hotel's beach, the question of transportation is very important for you. The most comfortable way to explore the Dominican Republic is, of course, renting a car or a motorbike. Renting a vehicle gives you the freedom of going where you want and when you want.

All Dominican Republic airports have rent-a-car offices. Car rental is available in most tourism destinations in the Dominican Republic. Many rent-a-car offices can offer you any type of vehicle you like - SUV, van, motocycle, scooter, or quad bike. You can rent a vehicle for any period (half-day, full day and longer rental periods).

To rent a car or other vehicle you will need to produce a valid passport and valid driver's license (International or from your country). A credit card is needed to secure a vehicle rental contract. The minimum age to rent a car is 21 years old (however, with some major car rentals it can be 25 years).

Things to be done at a rental agency to avoid problems: find out about the insurance details; thoroughly inspect the vehicle you're renting before leaving the agency and ensure that your contract indicates all existing damages to the vehicle; write down a contact number of the rental agency to in the case you encounter any problems with the vehicle.

In the Dominican Republic driving is done on the right side. The main roads are in good conditions throughout the country, but secondary roads are not so good and can have potholes and unpaved sections. We advise you to avoid night driving, if possible, since the roads are poorly lit (especially in the provinces) and animals can cross the road without being noticed.

Driving rules are similar to those in other countries. Honking the horn to give warning before passing is a commonly practiced custom. Tolls must be paid on expressways in and out of Santo Domingo. The measure unit for fuel is the American gallon.
