Best Beaches in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic has more than 1,000 miles of wonderful beaches. The stretch of white sand from Punta Cana to Bavaro is considered the longest beach in Caribbean. The majority of the Dominican beaches is accessible to the public.
But be careful: some spots have strong dangerous currents, which may be the reason why they are undeveloped. In order to find a beach on a map, the first thing you should know that beach is playa in Spanish. The description of the best beaches in the Dominican Republic is below.

Playa Bahoruco

Playa Bahoruco is an isolated, undeveloped Caribbean beach with ruged cliffs, dropping to golden sand, and turquoise water. The beach is called by many the "Pearl of the South". Bahoruco beach is a popular surfing spot, it features the biggest waves in the area. Fresh fish, including even coconut sea bass, are offered at the beach snacks.

Playa Boca Chica

Playa Boca Chica is conveniently located close to the capital city of Santo Domingo. The beach has the reef-protected lagoon and powder-white sand. Playa Boca Chica is the perfect beach for children, because there are no waves and no deep waters. The beach is crowded on Sundays, when capital city dwellers come from Santo Domingo to spend their weekend. The rest of the week Playa Boca Chica is for tourists. There are some shops on the main street that is parallel to the beach where you can buy nice silver jewelry and paintings.

Restaurants and bars are back-to-back, spilling onto the sand. You may have a lunch in one of them, overlooking the lagoon.

Playa Sosua

Sosua Bay is a beautiful, natural harbor, famous for its coral reefs and dive sites. It is about 20 minutes drive from Puerto Plata. Snorkeling from the beach can be good here, but the most interesting spots are offshore, closer to the coral reefs.

Punta Cana

One of the best Carebbean resort areas, Punta Cana is 20 miles of pearl-white sand shaded by swaying coconut palms. Each hotel has its own strip of sand here with rows of chaise lounges. There are some deserted stretches in the Uvero Alto area, but the road is rough and it has few services.
